2009 North American Inter-District Meeting Topic: ZIF and Local Service Presenter: Jackie Beaudry Facilitator: Lynn Goodhue Jackie first gave a PowerPoint which describes the current Zonta International Service and ZISVAW projects (also on this web site). She then asked the participants to break up into small groups with each table to brainstorm and come up with one proposal for a new local service projects tied in with one of the ZI IS or ZISVAW project. She asked participants to consider also ideas on how to sell the idea to their club. The table below lists the projects that participants came up with (note: some of them are current club projects), which ZI projects they tie to, and ideas for getting the clubs excited about the project. A nearby hospital has a wing for victims of sexual violence, but they have nothing to give the women who are admitted. Suggested project: provide underwear, sweats, cosmetics and other necessities. ZISVAW: Syria Tell the stories of the victims so club members get upset about the lack of basic necessities provided. Work on legislation in state (Oklahoma, for example) to make human trafficking illegal in the state. ZISVAW: Egypt Learn what the existing state laws are (in this example, there were none). Dialog with legislators, other Zontians, etc. Have good speakers present informative programs. Awareness of and participation in “16 Days of Advocacy” ZISVAW (general) Emphasize low cost of participation, potential for good publicity and for hands-on activities. Support a local woman doctor who returns to Nigeria every year to provide cancer and HIV care. IS: Rwanda Combine fund-raising and awareness programs. Project for women in transition due to drug addictions, HIV and/or domestic violence IS: Rwanda Combine fund-raising and awareness programs RAVE walk – rape awareness and violence elimination – district-wide ZISVAW (general) Include Z Club, all dress in purple tshirts. A fun activity that provides opportunity for publicity and for raising awareness Pamphlet with phone numbers to give to women in Safe Cities or college campuses, small enough to fit in shoes or bra, written in many languages IS: Safe cities It’s a way to participate in a ZIFfunded project while also doing service locally. IS: (health status) FOLLOW-UP: Jackie suggests that we take the PowerPoint and adapt for our own clubs, area meetings or district seminars/conferences. Then divide members into small groups for brainstorming and sharing with the larger group. For area or district meetings, try to have members from the same club working together.
