“Women Hold Up Half the Sky”

Every class of Governors chooses a name. My group chose the name “THE STARZ”. It is an acrostic to remind us of the important guidelines that we must adhere to during our biennium. S – Simplicity T – Transparency A - Accountability R - Responsibility Z – Zonta This made me think about what I might do that was special for District 15 on this our 90th year. I decided that I would give you a star, - but not just any star, The Star of Zonta. As Zontians, you are all stars to me, no two alike and shining with reflected light from a common source and with unshakeable resolve. I chose the constellation Ursa Major because it is visible from most of the Northern Hemisphere and everybody knows how to find the Big Dipper. When one names a star one has the opportunity to make a dedication. The Star of Zonta is dedicated to Members of Zonta International. It will be registered on November 8, 2009. The slogan I chose which I felt best suited the occasion is a Chinese proverb which states “Women Hold Up Half the Sky”. This star chart (slide #3) shows you the actual coordinates of the Star of Zonta. What I would like you to do is when you see the Big Dipper and gaze in the direction of our star, ponder on what Zonta does, why we do it and why it matters so much – and perhaps at that very moment in time, unbeknownst to you, another Zontian is sharing that gaze and similar thoughts. With the solidarity of the sisterhood of Zonta we shall continue to do what is right in the face of all odds. “Women want a world free from hatred, violence and poverty, a world of equal opportunities and rights, a world that is prosperous and secure for all.” Noeleen Heyzer, Executive Director UNIFEM The Star of Zonta has been registered in the Name a Star Live Astronomical Catalogue. The name, coordinates and message of dedication will be launched into space aboard the next Space Services Inc (SSI) spacecraft and become part of the SSI orbital archive.
